Are you without a car? Try the Appin Community Transport Scheme!
Operating in a comfortable, wheelchair-accessible Volkswagen Sharan driven by local volunteers, the scheme fills the gap where public transport is limited—offering a cost-effective alternative to running a car or taking a taxi.
What Can You Use the Car For?
Regular Local Trips: Shopping, banking, post office runs, hairdressers, and local social events (such as weekly soup lunches and monthly afternoon socials), typically running on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Essential Medical Appointments: Travel to local GP surgeries or hospital appointments in Oban, Fort William, Ballachulish, Glasgow, or Inverness (Monday to Friday). Medical journeys take priority.
How to Get Started in 3 Steps
Register as a Member
Due to licensing rules (Section 19), the service is only available to registered members who meet the criteria (older residents or those with mobility/travel independence needs). Contact Transport Co-ordinator Isobel MacCorquodale to arrange a short home visit to discuss your needs and set up your registration.
Book Your Journey
Once registered, call the co-ordinator to request a ride. Bookings can be made up to 4 weeks in advance (at least 24 hours' notice is requested).
Travel & Pay a Low Fixed Fare
Your driver will pick you up at your door, displaying their Driver Identity Badge. Simply pay the driver in exact cash when you get in. Fares are set at reasonable rates (e.g., £5 within Appin, £15 to Oban, £20 to Fort William).
Get Involved or Get in Touch
Volunteer Drivers Needed: If you enjoy driving and can spare at least half a day a month, the scheme is always looking for volunteer drivers (ages 30–70; PVG check and training provided).
Contact the Co-ordinator: Phone 07960 350753 or email transport@appin.scot.
