Interested in supporting BBC Alba in the BBC Charter Review?
BBC ALBA is widely valued but its foundations are less secure than other minority-language services.
In 2024-25, around £100 million more was spent on Welsh-language television and radio than on Gaelic-language services - a difference that largely reflects how the two services are set up in law. Unlike the Welsh-language television channel (S4C), BBC ALBA does not have statutory recognition in the BBC Charter, and its funding is agreed year by year.
The Consultation is now live and this is the stage of the process when stakeholder voices can make a genuine difference. If you do choose to respond, send a copy to consultation@mgalba.com so that they can help demonstrate the breadth of support for securing Gaelic television’s future.
HOW TO TAKE ACTION

Your recommendations could include:
Secure funding, like S4C
BBC ALBA needs a clear, long-term funding settlement, agreed in the same way as Welsh-language channel S4C. This would give stability, protect Gaelic broadcasting for the future, and show that Gaelic and Welsh languages are valued equally.
Make BBC ALBA easy to find
BBC ALBA should be easy to access on BBC iPlayer. A single-click route to Gaelic content would make a real difference for viewers and help more people discover the channel.
Let the world watch
Gaelic content should be available beyond the UK. Removing geo-blocking, or creating a dedicated international BBC ALBA option, would allow people around the world to connect with Gaelic language and culture, not least the Gaelic diaspora.
Protect the channel itself
There should be a clear commitment to keep BBC ALBA as a dedicated TV channel. Without this guarantee, the service could be reduced, merged, or lost altogether.
Why this matters
BBC ALBA supports the Gaelic language, the creative economy, and communities across Scotland and far beyond. These changes would help secure its future, grow its audience, and ensure Gaelic continues to have a strong, visible place in public life.
Thank you for considering this exciting opportunity to make an impact.
